Get Your eCommerce Site Ready for the Holidays

December 10, 2014 by Allison Carter

The holiday shopping season is in full force right now and each year more and more consumers turn to online shopping.

As a business, make sure you are maximizing your eCommerce site this holiday season with these tips:

1. Have a responsive website.
Mobile sales are on the rise as people are buying from smartphones, tablets, and other devices.  You must make sure that all elements of your website, including your eCommerce site, are optimized for mobile.  This means a responsive design.  If you have questions about responsive design start by downloading our white paper.

2. Use a currency convertor.
Not all of your buyers are going to be in your immediate market or, indeed, even in your country.  Think global!  Your small business can meet the demand of global customers and be prepared with a currency convertor for your shop.  BP Studios proudly partnered with Kentico to offer a currency convertor program to make this easy.

3. Make sure your site has good SEO.
SEO means "search engine optimization."  Most online shoppers will run a Google search on the product they want to buy, so make sure your product pops up!  This includes keyword-rich text, blog posts and articles, metadata and metatags that are right, social media cues, and image optimization as well.  Read up on our basics of SEO and contact us to get started on a comprehensive SEO strategy.  By getting your site in the Google search results, you could be getting a brand new customer for life!

4.  Have a fast page load time.
As we discussed in our post on Top 6 Tips to Boost Your SEO, page speed matters. (You can also find tools we recommend for page speed testing in our article on SEO Tracking.)  Ideally, you want a load time of three seconds or less.  Research has shown that a one-second delay in page response can lead to a seven percent reduction in sales {source}. Especially during the busy time of the holidays, customers are not going to wait for your page to load.  Instead, they will look elsewhere.  So get a fast site!

Of course, the biggest thing you can do for your eCommerce site is to have a solid design that makes shopping easy for your customers.  Don't make them guess, don't make them click too much, and don't let them get confused.  This can be done with a good design as well as a strong plan for your content marketing.
