What is the cost of Responsive Web Design?

January 13, 2014 by Allison Carter

With responsive web design the way of the future and, quite frankly, necessary for your business to stay viable, we frequently get asked, “what is the cost of responsive web design?”

Well, it is kind of like pricing a house: it depends.  What is your foundation? What is your square footage? How many custom features do you have?

To build a responsive web design that works for you, the answers to all these questions matter.

A responsive web design must come from a solid foundation.  You should start by looking at what you currently have on your website.   How engaging is it?  Is it working for you?

A majority of websites currently on the Internet simply don’t lend themselves well to responsive web design.  Think about how many clicks it takes a visitor to find the information they want; think about your customized menus; think about your search features; think about the eCommerce and shopping experience you currently offer your customers.

If you haven’t rethought your design in awhile (and in Internet speak that means a year) then creating your responsive web design will require you to look hard at your base design.  It isn’t always possible to convert an existing website to a responsive design.

Also, you are going to need to do it all at once.  Think of your strategy as being an “all in” situation.  You cannot design a responsive web site solely for smartphones, thinking that in 2015 you can address tablets.  Do it all at once.  Then test it on all devices … and then test it again.  Put yourself in the shoes of a new visitor and experience it as they will.

So when it comes to building a budget for your responsive web design, it really all depends on where you currently live and what shape your “house” is in.

But we can unequivocally state that the cost of NOT having a responsive web design is catastrophically high to your business.

According to Forbes, 9 out of 10 mobile searches lead to action (more than half to sales) but 48% of users become frustrated and annoyed when on sites that have been either poorly optimized or not optimized at all

So, truly, the cost to NOT convert to a responsive web design is greater than the cost TO optimize your site and meet your customers where they are.

Invest in your business and your future: get a responsive web design.
