How to Get the Most Out of Pinterest for Your Business

September 15, 2014 by Allison Carter

Pinterest can be a major source of sales and leads for small businesses.  In fact, we talked about when (& why) you should use Pinterest for your business.

But if you decide to invest time in this particular social media platform, there are some things you should be doing to optimize for Pinterest:

1.  Always have good, clean, high quality images.
Pinterest is a visual platform.  If your website doesn't have images that entice and display your content well, then you are hurting yourself.  Make sure the images you use are professional and committed to your company's overall marketing look.

2.  Make it easy for visitors to pin your content.
By allowing visitors to pin your images, merchandise, and articles to their Pinterest boards quickly and easily, you will see more benefits to this platform.  If you are on WordPress there are a variety of plugins for easy-to-pin options.  One of the most popular is the Pinterest "Pin It" button plugin.  Regardless of your content management system, make sure you spend some time making it easy for your content to be shared by visitors.

3.  Make sure your images can stand alone.
Take some time to add your company logo or name to your images. Perhaps include text with more information about the item featured in the picture.  Frequently on Pinterest, browsers will focus solely on the picture, not even reading the accompanying text below.  Put important, relevant information in your picture!

Also, this will help should your picture become unattached from the original link on Pinterest (which happens).  By having text in your photograph, regardless of the active link it is attached to, you can still reap the benefits of that image being repinned.

4.  Make sure your site's pictures all have good titles and tags.
When a visitor uses a browser plugin to pin your content, the accompanying text will automatically be suggested as the title of the photo, along with any metadata and metatags associated with that photo.  Before uploading your photo, make sure the title is clear and strong.  Think about including keywords and your business's name.

5. Don't run a blog post without an image of some kind.
If Pinterest can not read an image on the page, visitors won't be able to pin your content to Pinterest at all!  So give users a fighting chance to share your content on this powerful social media platform by giving them something to pin.
