Top Six Tips to Boost Your Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

May 14, 2014 by Allison carter

You've worked hard to design a beautiful, responsive website.  Your site is ready to speak to your customers and showcase who you are.  Now you need to tackle the next step: making sure that search engines (like Google) find you and recommend you to your audience.

"SEO" stands for "Search Engine Optimization."  This means, in effect, making sure your website is optimized to be crawled, found, and suggested by all the search engines out there, the biggest of which is Google.  While companies specialize in this since it can be a murky, difficult, and complicated field to navigate on your own, there are some real tricks you can take to make sure your website has good SEO.

1. Make sure you know, and use, your keywords!  You should make sure that you are using keywords for your industry and your business all over your website.  Google looks for keywords, the words that someone would type in the search field box, so it is important to know yours and use them!

2. Have a quick page speed.  Google in particular has not been shy about the fact that they are penalizing websites that are slow. Visit Google's PageSpeed Insights to see how quick your site loads.  This nifty tool will even provide tasks that you can do to speed up your site.  If it feels beyond you, contact the experts (like us) to help you streamline your site.

3. Remove any and all bad links.  There is no reason to have a broken link on your website.  It makes for a poor user experience. Naturally, search engines are going to penalize sites with these errors, not recommending them to browsers.  Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools to see all of your broken links.  Then get them fixed, ASAP.

5.  Clean up your metatags and metadata.  Your metatags and metadata exist somewhere in your system, find them and optimize those!  Search engines read a website's metatags and metadata to determine if the content matches a user's search.  You want to make sure you are using the right keywords.

6. Blog.  By blogging regularly (even once a week) you are notifying search engines that you are relevant, active, and providing good information.  Fresh content helps your SEO immensely, and this means that blogging has a true and measurable effect on your business.
